Mismatched Shoes Day invites people across Belgium to wear two different shoes on October 14, a simple gesture that opens the door to empathy, curiosity and conversation.
Many people encounter different challenges on their way. Mental health issues, abuse, language barriers, addiction, anxiety, poverty or illness can make it harder to take part fully in society, find work or simply feel included.
Making those realities more visible can help create greater understanding, empathy and openness.
Mismatched Shoes Day is an initiative of the Belgian regional ESF+ Funds, with support from the European Union and the regional and community authorities.
Together, they invest in local projects that strengthen participation, equal opportunities and social inclusion across Belgium. Many of these projects also help people find their way to the labour market and access work. By making some of their stories and experiences more visible, Mismatched Shoes Day aims to encourage people to look beyond first impressions and create greater empathy and understanding.
